cotton candy grapes
Cotton candy grapes are the invention of International Fruit Genetics, a Southern California breeding program. The grapes embody the sugary sweet flavor of the county fair and circus staple. The flavors of a Concord-like grape were combined with the firm, crisp qualities of a Vitis vineferia variety to create the cotton candy grapes. The grapes called “designer fruit” are a successful example of old-fashioned hand pollination, and painstaking breeding selection.
Cotton candy grapes look like your average green grape: oval-shaped, plump and firm. Their taste, however, is something entirely different. The flavor of these seedless grapes is just like cotton candy. It is sweet, with a higher Brix level than the average green table grape. There is very little tartness, which holds the sweetness on the tongue, and it has a slight hint of vanilla.
Serving Ideas
Cotton candy grapes were created as a table grape, to be enjoyed fresh straight from the farmer’s market or grocery store. Cotton candy grapes make a good substitute for kids’ snacks or additions to fruit salads.
Geography/History
Cotton candy grapes took over a decade to reach the tops of tables across America. International Fruit Genetics and a Southern California grape grower have paired to develop and distribute the cotton candy grape. The response has been positive. The grapes have been available in limited quantities since 2011, and due to their popularity the distributor will be doubling its production for 2014.
Seasons/Availability
Cotton candy grapes are available for a short time in the mid-summer.
