crowder shelling beans

Crowder peas, or crowder shelling beans, are a type of Cowpea. The Cowpea originated in Africa and includes varieties such as black-eyed peas and southern pea. The Crowder pea variety got its name from the pea’s tendency to crowd into the shell.

Crowder shelling beans are an heirloom legume variety with a bright green shell with pink and rose colored hues. The pods range from eight to 10 inches in length and contain anywhere from 12 to 18 small globular brown beans. These beans are referred to as ‘Crowder peas’ despite not being related to the common pea. Crowder peas offer a flavor reminiscent of Black-eyed peas with a starchy texture and consistency.

Serving Ideas

Crowder peas are most often found in soul food dishes and recipes from the American South. In southern states, Crowder peas are traditionally cooked in a chicken broth and flavored with bacon and onions. Serve as a side dish with okra or add to soups. The beans take on the flavor profile of what they are being cooked with. Shell Crowder peas within a few days of purchase; peas can be frozen for later use.

Geography/History

Crowder shelling beans are a variety of cowpea common in the southern United States. Cowpeas (Vigna unguiculata) originated in Africa five to 6 thousand years ago and are widely seen in Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia.

Seasons/Availability

Crowder shelling beans are available in the late summer.
