golden thread mushrooms

The golden thread mushroom, also known as the Worm Plant flower, is a cultivated version of the Caterpillar fungus. Both the golden thread mushroom and the Caterpillar fungus are derived from a parasitic fungus called Ophiocordyceps sinensis. In nature, the parasitic fungus obtains its nutrients by germinating in a living larva of a moth or a butterfly. The fungus kills and mummifies the larva, and grows out of the corpse, thus taking a shape of part worm part fungus. Unlike its natural counterpart, the golden thread mushrooms are cultivated using nutrients identical to the natural larvae. Therefore, the golden thread mushrooms only take the shape a fungus without the attached worm.

The golden thread mushrooms are recognized by their slightly orange color. Their caps are undistinguished from their thin club-shaped stems. The Gold Thread mushrooms can grow to two and half inches in length. It has a unique aroma, and its flavor is similar to other earthy Asian mushrooms.
