grapple apples
The grapple, pronounced “Grape-L”, is made with Washington State apples using a patented process that infuses the apple with the flavor of concord grapes.
Grapples are made using Fuji and on occasion Gala apples, they maintain the crisp texture and sweet flavor both apples are known. Their coloring, which is dependent upon which apple they are made with, is typically bright red to pink with a yellow blush and vertical striations. Grapples are known, of course, for their distinct grape flavor and aroma, which is created using an infusion process that includes bathing the apple in a combination of concentrated grape flavor and water.
Nutritional Value
The nutritional value of the grapple is not impacted by the grape flavor infusion process. With about 80 to 90 calories per apple depending on size they contain a small amount of vitamin A and C as well as a trace amount of calcium. They also contain a dietary fiber known as pectin, which has been shown to lower cholesterol levels and help prevent heart attacks.
Serving Ideas
Fresh eating is the best way to experience the unique grape/apple flavor of the grapple. Pair with sharp cheese for an appetizer or add slices to fruit and green salads. Perfect for snacking on out of hand and for adding to kids lunch boxes. Add slices to sandwiches and quesadillas. Grapples will maintain some of their grape flavor when cooked as well, bake into pies and tarts or slice thick and roast, sauté or grill.
Geography/History
Grapples were invented by Todd Synder of C&O Nursery in Wenatchee, Washington State. Washington Fuji apples and occasionally Gala apples are used in the grapple making process as their skin breaths well and best takes on the grape flavor. Apples are first scanned to test for Brix levels using infrared cameras, selecting only the sweetest apples. The apples are then checked for size, color and quality, then infused and lastly moved to cold storage where they further take on their grape flavor. Grapples are made exclusively by C&O Nursery and are distributed around the world.
Seasons/Availability
Grapples are available year round.
