honey belle pears
Honey belle pears are known as the sweetest wonder of the world ‘down under’.
Honey belle pears are petite green fruits with a vibrant red flush. They are naturally sweet and are best eaten when fresh and crisp. Pears, or Pipfruit (so called for the tiny pips, or seeds, in the middle of the fruit) have been growing in this area of the North Island of New Zealand since the 1960s and now accounts for half of the national export. The honey belle is a relatively new variety, still not quite on the international radar.
Serving Ideas
Honey belle pears make great fresh, out-of-hand snacks, particularly because of their size. Add fresh to salads or bake in a nice pear cake. Poach pears in either white or red wine to soften. Honey belles hold their shape when cooked, in tarts or pies. Honey belle’s should be kept refrigerated until ready to eat.
Geography/History
The honey belle is grown exclusively in the “fruit bowl” of New Zealand, otherwise known as Hawke’s Bay. Pears, or Pipfruit (so called for the tiny pip, or seeds, in the middle of the fruit) have been growing in this area of the North Island of New Zealand since the 1960s and now accounts for half of the national export. The honey belle is a relatively new variety, still not quite on the international radar.
Seasons/Availability
The honey belle pear is available for a short time in the Spring.
