king de la grapes

King de la grapes are very popular in Japan; the particular bunch in the picture above cost around twenty-five dollars in 2013. "king de la grapes" is French for 'King of the Grapes', but this grape should not be confused with the grape that also shares this moniker, the Cabernet grape.

These hybrid grapes are very aromatic, small, and reddish-brown. The king de la grape is very flavorful, sweet and is quite juicy. Because they are seedless, they are very easy to eat.

Serving Ideas

Due to the sweet flavor and juiciness of the king de la grapes, they are excellent fresh out-of-hand. Make jellies or jams or combine with other fruits in pies and cakes. The sweetness and the aroma of its Muscat parentage make these Japanese grapes excellent pairing with a variety of cheeses.

Geography/History

The king de la grape is a marriage of European and American grapes. The Delaware grape (Vitis labrusca) and the Muscat Alexandria (Vitis vinifera) grapes were combined to create the king de la grape in Japan. They were officially registered as a new grape variety in Osaka, Japan in 1985. They can be found in markets throughout Japan.

Seasons/Availability

King de la grapes are available through the spring and summer months.
