purple plum radish
The purple plum radish (Raphanus sativus), is a cruciferous root vegetable and a member of the Brassicaceae family. Unlike many other varieties of radish the purple plum is never pithy and stays crisp longer than most radishes. The purple plum radish is often included in mixed radish bundles and is one of the radishes found in the Easter Egg radish mix.
Purple-to-burgundy, this petite globe shaped radish is only 1 to 1 ½ inches in diameter. Its vibrantly hued thin skin encases a bright white flesh. Topped with dark green leaves the purple plum radish’s texture is crisp and offers a subtle sweetness and pleasantly sharp radish spice.
Nutritional Value
Purple plum radishes are a good source of vitamin C and provide potassium and magnesium.
Serving Ideas
The vibrant color of purple plum radishes make them ideal for use on crudité plates or sliced thin and layered on buttered toast or crackers. Chop and add to salsas, salads and slaws to add color and a radish spice. Roasting the purple plum radish will enhance their naturally sweet flavor. Its edible leaves can be added to salads or used in stir-fries and soups.
Geography/History
A French heirloom variety the purple plum radish dates back to pre-1779 when it was mentioned in “Every man his own garden” by Thomas Mauve. Slow to bolt and more tolerant to heat than most radishes the purple plum radish is easy to grow and ready to harvest within 30 days of planting.
Seasons/Availability
The purple plum radish is available year round.
