rich sweetness melon

The rich sweetness melon is an heirloom variety melon and a member of the Cucurbitaceae or Cucurbit family. Botanically known as Cucumis melo 'rich sweetness 132' the rich sweetness melon is also known as Sweet Russian Striped melon and rich sweetness 132 melon. This specialty melon is known as a personal, one size and ice box melon as a result of its petite size.

Rich sweetness melons are a very petite variety melon that typically do not exceed a quarter pound, and are about the size of a baseball. Colored in burnt orange with golden yellow striping, the thin exterior skin and unique coloring make this melon easily recognizable. The inner flesh is translucent creamy white in color and is exceptionally juicy. The rich sweetness melon lives up to its name and is very aromatic offering a sweet melon flavor reminiscent of honeydew and cantaloupe. The seed cavity contains numerous seeds surrounded by a sour jelly, which should be scooped out and discarded prior to consuming.

Serving Ideas

The petite size of rich sweetness melons makes them ideal for serving as a personal one serving melon for fresh eating. They can be eaten halved as is or stuffed with other fruits or nuts. Peeled and sliced lengthwise they can be paired with savory accompaniments such as prosciutto, salami, parmesan, feta cheese and pine nuts. Puree and use as a base for soups, sauces, cocktails and smoothies. Cube and add to fruit and green salads. Rich sweetness melons will keep at room temperature until ripe. Once ripe keep melons refrigerated. If sliced wrap in plastic to prevent the cut melon from absorbing the smell and flavor of others foods in the refrigerator. Uncut melon will keep refrigerated for five days, cut melon should be used within three days.

Geography/History

A Russian variety melon the rich sweetness melon originated in the Soviet Union. Relatively new to the United States the rich sweetness melon is a specialty melon and can be found at farmers markets and specialty grocers. Like many varieties of melon the rich sweetness melon thrives in full sun and dry, warm to hot growing conditions. A vining type the rich sweetness melon plant produces petite fruits making it ideal for home gardens. A prolific fruiter the vines of the rich sweetness melon will benefit from being trellised. Some growers tout treating the rich sweetness melon with epson salts while growing as a means of increasing the sweetness of the fruits produced.

Rich sweetness melons are available in the mid-summer months.
