spam meat

Processed and precooked pork meat in a can. It is a mixture of chopped pork shoulder meat mixed with ham, salt, water, modified potato starch and other preservatives. First introduced in 1937 by the Hormel Foods Corporation, spam meat was made popular in World War II as it was one of the cheapest and safest ways to feed the soldiers meat on a regular basis.

Recent studies have linked the persistent consumption of spam meat to increased risk of developing diabetes among Native Americans, as spam meat has been a common food subsidized by the government on reservations. Many of these communities are located in very rural areas with limited access to grocery stores so spam meet and foods having a long shelf life are most common.
