sungreen garden cherry tomatoes

Sungreen garden cherry tomatoes are a new hybrid variety of cherry tomato that was developed specifically for its color and sweetness.

These evergreen cherry tomatoes are medium to large-sized, plump and sweet. Sungreen garden cherry tomatoes have a thin skin with hint of yellow and occasional striations. They are meaty and juicy, with a sweeter flavor than most cherry tomatoes. Sungreen garden cherry tomatoes have a Brix level of 9, whereas a typical cherry tomato has a Brix level of 7. The Brix level measures the amount of sugars and minerals in a fruit or vegetable, and fruit with a high Brix level is considered higher quality. Unripe cherry tomatoes have a Brix level of 5.

Serving Ideas

Sungreen garden cherry tomatoes can be added to a mix of a variety of multi-colored cherry tomatoes. The benefit of sungreen garden cherry tomatoes is that they are green when ripe, whereas most other “green” cherry tomatoes are still unripe. These tomatoes will be a welcome taste in mixed cherry tomato dishes or amongst a caprese salad or pasta dish. Eat fresh out-of-hand or slice in half and roast or marinate for a side dish. Stuff sungreen garden cherry tomatoes with soft cheese or crab meat, or slice and add to homemade pizza.

Geography/History

Sungreen garden cherry tomatoes were developed by the Tokita Seed Company in Japan and the new seed variety was released at the end of 2011. The color and taste of the sungreen hybrid variety garnered attention and was nominated for the Fruit Logisitica Innovation Award of 2012. These new cherry tomatoes have been through trial and testing in the US, Italy, France, Japan, and a few other select countries. For now, the focus is on European, American and Japanese markets; however, the Tokita Seed Co. does intend to take the sungreen into other markets eventually.

Seasons/Availability

Sungreen garden cherry tomatoes are available from mid-summer through early fall.
