Helmert elevation
The value H HN found for the elevation of a point P N by dividing the geopotential number W N by an approximation g HN to the average value of the acceleration of gravity along the vertical between P N and the geoid: H HN = W N / g HN. WN is calculated from the measured differences ΔH n of elevation between points P n-1 and P n along a route from point P o on the geoid to P N, and the measured or otherwise determined values gn of the accel-eration of gravity at these points P n: W N = Σ g n ΔH n (n = 1 to N). The value g HN is calculated from the measured value g N of the acceleration at P N, the Bouguer gravity correction δg B, and the free air gravity correction δg f: g HN = g N - δg B - δg f / 2. This is approximately the value of the acceleration at a point on the vertical through P N and halfway between P N and the geoid. The Helmert elevation is also called the Helmert height.
