Smith College

Smith College is a women's liberal arts college located in Northampton, Massachusetts. Founded in 1871, the private institution is the largest member of the Seven Sisters, a group of seven northeastern liberal arts colleges that were originally created for women. Smith is part of the Five Colleges consortium, which includes Amherst, Mount Holyoke, Hampshire, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. In 2010, U.S. News & World Report ranked it 14th among Best Liberal Arts Colleges.

Smith has more than 120 student organizations specializing in various fields of interests such as a botany group and several cappella groups on campus. The Smith Pioneers have 14 NCAA Division III varsity sports that compete in the Eastern College Athletic Conference. Smith does not have large dorms but rather 36 separate houses that range from 18th century to modern in style. Each house is home to between 10 and 100 students, allowing for socialization among students from all classes.

Notable alumnae include Catharine MacKinnon, Jane Bannister, Nancy Reagan, Barbara Bush (dropped out before graduating), Betty Friedan, Gloria Steinem, Julia Child, Madeleine L'Engle, Sylvia Plath, Sherry Rehman, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Rochelle Lazarus, Laura D'Andrea Tyson and Yolanda King.
