stg 44

STG 44, also known as MP 44, is an assault rifle developed and used during World War 2 in Nazi Germany. It is significant because it was the first successful design of this class of weapons. STG 44 was capable of full automatic fire and used 30 round magazines. It was chambered for 7.92x33 Kurz, the first successful "intermediate round" - an assault rifle cartridge which is less powerful than normal rifle round, and more powerful than pistol rounds typically used by submachine guns. Adolf Hitler did not like the original name Machinen Pistole (hence "MP"), and ordered the rifle to be renamed into "Sturmgewehr" - STG 44. Its name can be translated into English as "assault weapon", and this is the name this rifle gave to the whole new class of weapons, as its first member.
