Georgetown
Georgetown, estimated population 239,227 (2009), is the capital and largest city of Guyana, located in the Demerara-Mahaica region. It is situated on the Atlantic Ocean coast at the mouth of the Demerara River and it was nicknamed 'Garden City of the Caribbean.'
The city of Georgetown began as a small town in the 18th century and it wasn't until the French captured the colony in 1782 when they started developing the town and made it their capital city. Today it serves primarily as a retail and administrative centre and is also the financial centre of Guyana with a large portion of the major businesses.
Georgetown is an important city for Guyana and the Caribbean. There are also many tourist attractions in Georgetown including the St. George's cathedral, the Stabroek market, the Demerara Harbour Bridge, and the Pegasus hotel.
