Genetic engineering

The science of modifying and manipulating genes to create new artificial DNA or synthetic genes of different organisms. There are many purposes for genetic engineering, some of which include finding better treatment for diseases, or simply for discovering new organism of interest.

Contributors in Genetic engineering

Genetic engineering

Mendel's Laws

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Two laws summarizing Gregor Mendel's theory of inheritance. The Law of Segregation states that each hereditary characteristic is controlled by two `factors' (now called alleles), which segregate and ...

complementary genes

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Two or more interdependent genes, such that (in the case of dominant complementarity) the dominant allele from either gene can only produce an effect on the phenotype of an organism if the dominant ...

direct repeat

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Two or more stretches of DNA within a single molecule which have the same nucleotide sequence in the same orientation. Direct repeats may be either adjacent to one another or far apart on the same ...

balanced polymorphism

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Two or more types of individuals maintained in the same breeding population.

kinetochores

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Two parallel bushlike filaments situated in the centromere of a chromosome.

inverted repeat

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Two regions of a nucleic acid molecule which have the same nucleotide sequence but in an inverted orientation, such as 5´ GCACTTG... ...CAAGTGC 3´ 3´ CGTGAAC... ...GTTCACG 5´ Because they contain ...

double crossing-over

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Two simultaneous reciprocal breakage and reunion events between the same two chromatids.
