Resistors

variable resistor

Electronic components; Resistors

A resistor that is not fixed in value. A resistor that may change its value. Also called a potentiometer, trimmer, or rheostat.

bare metal element resistor

Electronic components; Resistors

A small value resistor with no coating or covering and consists only of the resistive element attached (welded) to two terminals.

positive temperature coefficient (PTC)

Electronic components; Resistors

A device with a the resistance that will increase as temperature does A type of thermistor as shown by the picture to the right.

bleeder current

Electronic components; Resistors

The current through a bleeder resistor. In a voltage divider, bleeder current is usually determined by the 10 percent rule of thumb.

resistance wire

Electronic components; Resistors

A wire made of an alloy (nichrome wire) which has a high resistance per unit length. Resistance wire is used in wirewound resistors.

cermet

Electronic components; Resistors

A high temperature metal dielectric composed of both ceramic (cer) and metallic (met) materials used in resistors and potentiometers.

non-inductive resistor

Electronic components; Resistors

A Wire-Wound resistor produced that exhibits low inductance characteristics, perhaps around 1 percent of a normal wirewound resistor.
