short captive column

Construction; Seismic safety

Columns with height-to-depth ratios less than 75% of the nominal height-to-depth ratios of the typical columns at that level. These columns, which may not be designed as part of the primary ...

sheathing

Construction; Seismic safety

Lumber or panel products that are attached to parallel framing members, typically forming wall, floor, ceiling, or roof surfaces.

shallow foundation

Construction; Seismic safety

Isolated or continuous spread footings or mats.

seismic demand

Construction; Seismic safety

Seismic hazard level commonly expressed in the form of a ground shaking response spectrum. It may also include an estimate of permanent ground deformation.

secondary element

Construction; Seismic safety

An element that does not affect the ability of the structure to resist earthquake-induced deformations.

secondary component

Construction; Seismic safety

Those components that are not required for lateral force resistance (contrasted to Primary Components). They may or may not actually resist some lateral forces.
