Analytic philosophy is the tradition of philosophy associated with English-speaking philosophers, mainly in North America and the United Kingdom, since the early twentieth century. The name comes from the tradition's focus on analysis of concepts.

The name “analytic philosophy” is therefore a broad one, but the core use of the term describes philosophy focused on the use of logic, careful language and science to refine and evaluate philosophical problems.

Analytic philosophy began with a general rejection of idealism. The founders of analytic philosophy are generally seen to be George Moore and Gottlob Frege, with later and more profound growth coming from Bertrand Russell and Ludwig Wittgenstein.

Western philosophy is generally divided between analytic philosophy, and continental philosophy, which generally refers to the more speculative philosophical tradition followed on the European mainland during the same time period.
