Kalimotxo (or Calimocho) is a mixed drink made of 50% red wine and 50% cola soft drink typical from the north of Spain. It’s usually served in a big glass full of ice or in its cheaper version, in plastic glasses of one liter called Katxis (depending in the part of Spain where you ask for it, they could be also called minis, litros, macetas…etc).

It is very common to see people sharing glasses of Kalimotxo in the streets of Spain at night during the botellon (drinking street gatherings where people meet before going to pubs).

Actually, the origin of the name is not certainly known. It is said that in 1972 a group of friends were serving drinks during the festivals of Puerto Viejo (Basque Country, Spain) and they noticed that the wine was so bad that it needed to be mixed with something else. So two of them, Kalimero and Motxo (hence Kalimotxo), decided to mixed it with cola, and that’s where the name came from.
