Keystone XL Pipeline

An extension of the Keystone Pipeline, which currently carries oil sands bitumen from Hardisty, Alberta, over to Manitoba, then down through the Dakotas and Nebraska. The current pipeline then splits to carry the oil sands to Illinois and to Oklahoma. The extension proposal has two phases. The first would extend the pipeline from Cushing, Oklahoma to Houston, Texas and Port Arthur, Louisiana. The second would create a more direct route from Hardisty to Steele City Nebraska.

The Keyston XL extension has faced a good amount of backlash from environmental groups. Because the pipeline goes through the Nebraska Sand Hills region, many people are worried about the environmental effects the pipeline would have on the region. Most recently President Obama has said that the Keystone XL would have to prove that it would not increase carbon emissions for him to approve the extension.

Republicans in favor of the extension defend the extension proposal on the grounds that it would create jobs and energy independence from the Middle East.
