Kingdom Tower

Kingdom Tower is a super-high skyscraper currently under construction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Formerly known as the Mile-High Tower, Kingdom Tower is the centerpiece of the US$20 billion Kingdom City new development complex located along the Red Sea on the north side of Jeddah. Originally planned to be one mile (1.6 km) high, the building was scaled down to about 3,281 ft (1 km). Upon completion in 2018, Kingdom Tower will become the tallest building in the world, as well as the first structure to reach the one-kilometer-high mark.

The Kingdom Tower is a mixed-use building featuring a luxury hotel, office space, serviced apartments, luxury condominiums and the world's highest observatory. The building incorporates many unique structural and aesthetic features. With its slender, subtly asymmetrical massing, the tower evokes a bundle of leaves shooting up from the ground—a reference to the folded fronds of young desert plant growth. The building also features a high-performance exterior wall system that minimizes energy consumption by reducing thermal loads. In addition, each of Kingdom Tower's three sides features a series of notches that create pockets of shadow that shield areas of the building from the sun and provide outdoor terraces with stunning views of Jeddah and the Red Sea. The Kingdom Tower complex will contain 59 elevators, including 54 single-deck and five double-deck elevators, along with 12 escalators.

The Kindom Tower is designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture of the U.S. and developed by Saudi Arabian Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal, the wealthiest Arab in the Middle East, and nephew of King Abdullah. The area surrounding Kingdom Tower is known as the Kingdom Tower Waterfront District. The 23-hectare Waterfront District provides a cohesive and pedestrian-friendly setting for the magnificent Kingdom Tower while creating a pleasant neighborhood experience nestled along the Kingdom City lakefront.
