Moebius
Moebius or Jean Henri Gaston Giraud, (May 8, 1938 - March 10, 2012), was one of France's leading cartoonists and comic-book artists who enjoyed widespread international recognition for his work in the French tradition of bandes dessinées. His spectacular science fantasy-based works led to such Hollywood classics as "Alien" and the science fiction adventure "Tron". He adopted the pseudonym Moebius for his illustrations in science fiction books and magazines.
Born in Paris, Giraud grew up drawing illustrations about cowboys and Indians. He became famous when he created the popular Western character Lieutenant Blueberry in 1963, which was the first anti-heroes comic series in the west. He also worked on influential French magazines including the visually arresting "Metal Hurlant" (Heavy Metal), a mixture of science fiction and epic fantasy, which was featured in a 1981 animated film of the same name.
Moebius died on March 10, 2012 at the age of 73 after a long illness.
