Quebec sovereignty movement
The Quebec sovereignty movement refers to the political movement and ideology of values, concepts and ideas that promote the succession of the province of Quebec from the rest of Canada. Quebec is largely a French-speaking province compared to the other eight largely English-speaking Canadian provinces.
The movement has its roots in the 1960s with the foundation of parties such as “The Rally for National Independence” and the “Quebec Liberation Front”. This has led to two referenda being held on whether Quebec should be independent. These were held in 1980 and 1995, respectively, with the 1980 result concluding with a 60% ‘no’ vote, and a much closer ‘no’ vote of 50.6% in 1995.
