Silver Ghost Touring Car

Rolls Royce produced the Silver Ghost from 1906 to 1926, and during the war years production was for armored cars. The starting handle was changed to a lever that operated from within the armored body on a ratchet against the flywheel. These cars became the ultimate in luxury motoring in the early days of motorized travel. Rolls Royce would build the chassis and mechanical parts, and owners would then have bodies built to their specifications by various body builders such as Barker or Hooper. During this time manufacturers used to compete in speed and reliability trials such as the London to Edinborough run. Rolls Royce used a car with an open touring body which became known as the London to Edinborough body style which is on this car.

This Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Touring Car was one of the later 40/50 HP Rolls-Royce's produced before the Great War and constructed with all the improvements introduced since production began in 1907. The most notable feature, yet the least visible, is its very rare and highly desirable Colonial Alpine Cagle Chassis complete with a four-speed gearbox, 7428cc inline 6-cylinder engine, producing 50 horsepower at 1,500 RPM. There is a 4-speed manual gearbox and larger 2-wheel mechanical drum brakes. This car rides on a 146.5-inch wheelbase frame with semi-elliptic springs suspending the front axle and cantilever springs suspending the rear axle.
