The Wife of Bath’s Tale
The Wife of Bath’s Tale is the sixth tale from Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. She first talks about her opinions on marriage, how she has been married five times, and says that the last time was for money, not love. Her tale is based around a young knight who rapes a woman and is sent on a quest to discover what women want most to atone for his crime. An ugly old woman tells him the answer is that woman want control of their husbands and their own lives. In exchange for this, he must marry her, but because of he gives the woman control of the marriage, she renders herself beautiful and faithful.
