autumn greeting apples

The name autumn greeting is derived from the idea that apples are typically an autumnal fruit and this particular variety comes to us from the Southern Hemisphere where their fall aligns with our spring. Hence, an “autumn greeting in June”.

The autumn greeting is a large apple with a dark red blush that is sometimes streaked over its yellow skin. Its flesh is crisp and aromatic. The autumn greeting apple is said to have that ‘old fashioned apple flavor’ with a hint of tartness underlying its sweetness.

Serving Ideas

This heirloom variety of apple has multiple applications; keep whole to enjoy fresh out-of-hand or slice and share. Dice for green salads or add to creamy chicken or Waldorf salads. Slice for apple pies or tarts. The old-fashioned apple flavors compliment baked goods like cakes or muffins.

Geography/History

The autumn greeting apple is only grown in Argentina, making it a rare heirloom variety. The apple ripens in the fall in Argentina, which is spring for those in the Northern Hemisphere, which is a rare occurrence for this fruit. They are only available for a limited time.

Seasons/Availability

The autumn greeting apple is available during the late spring in the Northern Hemisphere and during the late autumn in the Southern Hemisphere.
