black twig apples

The black twig apple was introduced to the market near Fayetteville, Tennessee around 1830. The black twig apple became a popular dessert variety in the 19th and early 20th century in Central Virginia, and it was rumored that the black twig was Andrew Jackson’s favorite apple.

The black twig is a medium sized apple with a wide variance in coloring, but typically has a yellow-green background, and can be washed and striped a dark red, or completely enveloped in the dark red color. The black twig has a yellow-green flesh that despite having a high juice content is extremely tart and astringent. This apple is suitable for fresh eating and adds a kick to both sweet and hard cider.

Seasons/Availability

Black twig apples are available in the fall.
