case studies
A form of training for management used extensively to develop the intellectual skills of analysis, reasoning and judgement. It is based mainly on past real-life situations. Case studies are associated particularly with the teaching methods of the Harvard Business School. Unlike business games, case studies have no action component to them. One important criticism of the method is that it encourages students to believe that every ‘problem’ has a ‘solution’ if only they are clever enough to find it, and that this does not prepare them to deal with situations which neither they nor anyone else have ever encountered before – which is much more like the real world.
