One of the verb argument constructions studied by Adele Goldberg in the development of her theory of construction grammar (2). The ditransitive construction is associated with the syntactic frame (subj (v obj obj2)) (e.g. Paul gave Edith flowers), where both objects are noun phrases (NPs). There are claimed to be a number of properties that are specific to the ditransitive construction which cannot be predicted either from the lexical items that fill the construction or from other constructions in the language. These are summarized in Table 3. Crucially the ditransitive, as with other verb argument constructions, is held to exhibit constructional polysemy.
