golden dorsett apples

Golden dorsett apples, or Dorsett Golden apples as they are sometimes called, are one of only a few varieties considered to be “very” early season, making them quite unique. So unique, in fact, that they can be either early or late season apples depending on the environment in which they are growing. Well-suited for the tropical climates, these apples do not require a very long cold period to thrive.

Golden dorsett apples are larger in size and have an overall golden green color with a red and pink striped blush where they’ve grown facing the sun. The Bahamian apple can have russeting (darker, rough patches of skin) around the stem and calyx. The creamy yellow colored inner flesh is crisp and has a sweet flavor with lingering acidic notes.

Serving Ideas

Golden dorsett apples are eaten fresh or used in various cooking and baking applications. The sweeter apples make nice additions to tarts and pies. Slice golden dorsett apples and pair with blue cheese for stuffing pork loin. Grown in the summer, golden dorsett apples do not keep long (1-3 days); if grown in cooler climates they can be refrigerated up to a few months like most winter apples. Dorsett Golden apples are well-suited for canning and preserving. Cook sliced apples over medium heat, puree and process in a water bath or pressure canner.

Geography/History

The golden dorsett is a descendent of the Golden Delicious apple and was introduced in 1954. The summer apple was discovered amongst a small orchard of Golden Delicious trees which had been planted in Nassua, New Providence Island, Bahamas by New York transplant Mrs. Irene Dorsett. Golden dorsett apples received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. Golden dorsett apples also grow well in Mediterranean climates and can be found growing in Florida and Southern California as well as the Bahamas. Colder winters can change the golden dorsett’s flowering and fruiting schedule and can result in a much later season apple.

Seasons/Availability

Golden dorsett apples are available in the early summer in warmer climates and mid-fall in colder climates.
