green muscat grapes

Muscat grapes are some of the oldest cultivated grapes, originally planted as the Muscat of Alexander variety of Vitis vinifera. Muscat grapes are thought to be the ancestor of many known varieties of grape that are eaten today.

The green muscat, also known as Summer Muscat and White Muscat grape is green, plump and firm. It is sweet with a strong and bold Muscat flavor. Bred to be seedless, a bunch of green muscat grapes can reach up to two pounds.

Serving Ideas

Green muscat grapes can be eaten fresh out-of-hand or added to fruit salads or a more savory Waldorf salad. They are mostly dried for golden raisins or made into wine because the flavor of the grape does not diminish. The sweet and bold flavor would complement many summer dishes.

Geography/History

The seedless green muscat grape was released by the USDA in 1999 originally for use making raisins. Its early ripening schedule made it an ideal grape for drying on the vine. The Muscat grape is native to the Mediterranean, though it is now grown all over the world in temperate areas. California produces more Muscat grapes than any other state in the US.

Seasons/Availability

Green muscat grapes are available during the late summer months.
