iris recognition

A method of biometric identification that uses pattern-recognition algorithms on images of an individual's eyes. Because each individual's eyes contain complex and random patterns that make the iris unique, the recognition software can accurately identify the individual.

Iris scanning uses subtle infrared illumination to receive detail-rich images of the structures of the iris. Iris scanning is not the same as retina scanning, which uses a biometric technique on a person's retina to examine the patterns of blood vessels at the back of the eye.

Iris scanning is being considered to replace school ID's at many U.S. schools. An iris recognition security system would allow parents to keep track of their child's whereabouts through text and email alerts when they enter and leave both the school and the bus. The system would also make it nearly impossible for children to play hooky.
