non player-character (NPC)
Non player-character describes any character entity aside from the player. This includes hostile NPCs, more commonly referred to as mobs, and friendly NPCs like townspeople and computer security personell.
NPC is generally applied to the latter, as mob is applied to the former, to avoid confusion in conversation.
NPC is a limited term, and does not usually apply to stand in AI players in a mostly human vs human game (Bots), as there is a lack of character. However, unlike the term mob, NPCs may be completely stationary and have taken the form of crystals and trees since the earliest of games.
