The granting of refuge by a state to an individual who has fled his country because of persecution. This is a right stated in Article 14 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: "Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution." Protected grounds include race, nationality, religion, political opinions and membership, and participation in any particular social group or social activities. In recent years sexual persecution has also become legitimate grounds for asylum claims.
