red muscat grapes
Red muscat grapes are a variety of Vitis vinifera most often associated with winemaking. The Italian grapes are known by many names, such as Muscatel, Moscato and Moskatel, and include more than 200 varieties.
Red muscat grapes are bit smaller than the more common table grape variety, yet some bunches can reach up to a full pound. The skin of the red muscat grape can range in color from a pale blush to a deep red. The ancient grapes are known for their sweet taste and distinctive floral aroma. Red muscat grapes are seedless, juicy, and are full of antioxidant properties.
Serving Ideas
Red muscat grapes can be enjoyed on their own, as a snack, or paired with blue cheese and walnuts. The sweet flavor of these Mediterranean grapes lends well to jams and jellies. Roast whole red muscat grapes and serve with chicken or pork. Add red muscat grapes to curry dishes for a hint of sweetness. Freeze the grapes for a refreshing snack or add a few to a glass of wine to keep it chilled. Red muscat grapes keep up to two weeks refrigerated.
Geography/History
Recent studies have shown that Muscat grapes are the earliest cultivated variety, and the grape from which all other known grapes have descended. Native to Greece, the Muscat grape is grown throughout the Mediterranean region and was the first grape variety brought to the US and planted in California. Muscat grapes and the wine that bears the same name are considered “Italian grapes” after the Piedmont region in the country where the earliest cultivation is recorded in 1303. Muscat grapes are grown in many temperate regions around the world, including Chile, Spain, France and California.
Seasons/Availability
Muscat grapes are available during the spring months. Chilean imports are available in the fall.
