shotgun house

A style of home popular in the southern United States from the 1860's through the 1920's. The style is distinguishable by its narrow rectangular shape. A shotgun house is often no more than 12 feet (3.5 meters) wide, and feature no hallways. Instead the rooms are arranged one behind the other with doors at each end of the house.

Belief is that the homes originated in New Orleans based on Haitian influences on house design. The style however can be found as far away as Chicago, Key West, and California. The style was initially popular with the middle class, however it became a symbol of poverty in the mid-20th century.
