underwater hockey (UWH)
An underwater sport where two teams compete to move a puck across the bottom of a swimming pool into the opponent's goal. Each team can have up to ten players but with only six players on the field. Players must use a short stick, not more than 350mm, to move the puck.
For equipment, players have swimwear, a diving mask, snorkel, fins, stick, hat (such as a water polo cap) for ear protection, and a glove.
Underwater hockey was started in the UK in 1954 by Alan Blake and was originally called Octopush. The game then spread to Canada in 1962, Australia in the 1960s, and Asia in the late 1970s. It also became popular in other countries, such as the United States, Netherlands, South Africa, France, and to a lesser extant in Japan, Singapore, Germany, etc.
