Галаксија е масивен, гравитационо ограничен систем кој се состои од ѕвезди и ѕзездени остатоци, еден интерстеларен медиум од прашлив гас, и една важна, но не доволно разоткриена компонента, прелиминарно наречена темна материја. Исто така е наречена „млечен пат“.
