Contributors in Environment statistics

Environment statistics

fluorocarbon

Environment; Environment statistics

Gas used as a propellant in aerosols. It contributes to the destruction of the ozone layer in the stratosphere, thereby allowing harmful forms of solar radiation to reach the earth's surface.

ringelmann chart

Environment; Environment statistics

Series of shaded illustrations used to measure the opacity of air pollution emissions. The chart shades range from light grey to black and serve in the setting and enforcing of emission standards.

dissolved oxygen (DO)

Environment; Environment statistics

Amount of gaseous oxygen (O2) actually present in water expressed in terms either of its presence in the volume of water (milligrams of O2 per litre) or of its share in saturated water (percentage).

classification of environmental protection activities (CEPA)

Environment; Environment statistics

Draft classification proposed within the framework of the United Nations methodology for integrated environmental and economic accounting (United Nations, 1993a). See also environmental protection.

brackish water

Environment; Environment statistics

Water containing salts at a concentration significantly lower than that of sea water. The concentration of total dissolved salts is usually in the range of 1,000-10,000 milligrams per litre (mg/l).

nuclear power plant

Environment; Environment statistics

Facility that converts atomic energy into usable power. In a nuclear electric power plant, heat produced by a reactor is generally used to drive a turbine which in turn drives an electric generator.

chromium

Environment; Environment statistics

Heavy metal used in the manufacture of alloys and electroplating. It is a multivalent element that in hexavalent form can be toxic in drinking water if concentration exceeds 50 milligrams per litre.
