Human genome

The human genome consists of 23 chromosome and the small mitochondrial DNA. 22 of the 23 chromosomes are autosomal chromosome pairs and the last one being a gender-determining pair. In total, the human genome contains the sequences of the 3 billion chemical base pairs that make up human DNA and approximately 20,000-25,000 genes. By understanding human genome, scientists are able to develop new medical applications that can significantly advance the state of health care.

Contributors in Human genome

Human genome

adipose tissue

Medical; Human genome

1) Dense irregular connective tissue, which predominantly consists of adipocytes. 2) Connective tissue in which fat is stored and which has the cells distended by droplets of fat.

amyloid plaque

Medical; Human genome

Plaques consist of amyloid deposits surrounded by a web of astrocytic processes, swollen neurites, and neuron terminals; seen in the cerebral cortex in Alzheimer's disease.

arteriovenous

Medical; Human genome

Of, relating to, or connecting the arteries and veins (arteriovenous anastomoses).

anticodon

Medical; Human genome

The sequential set of three nucleotides in transfer RNA that interacts with its complement in messenger RNA, the codon, during translation in the ribosome.

aggregate

Medical; Human genome

Formed by the collection of units or particles into a body, mass, or amount.

adaptive radiation

Medical; Human genome

Evolutionary diversification of a generalized ancestral form with production of a number of adaptively specialized forms.

arrhythmia

Medical; Human genome

Any variation from the normal rhythm or rate of the heart beat.
