Human genome
The human genome consists of 23 chromosome and the small mitochondrial DNA. 22 of the 23 chromosomes are autosomal chromosome pairs and the last one being a gender-determining pair. In total, the human genome contains the sequences of the 3 billion chemical base pairs that make up human DNA and approximately 20,000-25,000 genes. By understanding human genome, scientists are able to develop new medical applications that can significantly advance the state of health care.
Contributors in Human genome
Human genome
adenoma
Medical; Human genome
1) A benign epithelial tumor with a glandular organization. 2) A noncancerous tumor.
acanthocytes
Medical; Human genome
Erythrocytes with protoplasmic projections giving the cell a thorny appearance.
acanthosis nigricans
Medical; Human genome
1) A circumscribed melanosis consisting of a brown-pigmented, velvety verrucosity or fine papillomatosis appearing in the axillae and other body folds. It occurs in association with endocrine ...
double helix
Medical; Human genome
1) The twisted-ladder shape that two linear strands of DNA assume when complementary nucleotides on opposing strands bond together. 2) The description of the structure of a DNA molecule. A DNA ...
gene silencing
Medical; Human genome
Interruption or suppression of the expression of a gene at transcriptional or translational levels.
genetic code
Medical; Human genome
The instructions in a gene that tell the cell how to make a specific protein. A, C, G, and T are the "letters" of the DNA code; they stand for the chemicals adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G), ...
