Apple SIM

Apple SIM is a universal SIM card that allows users to switch between carriers without having to commit to a term based contract or purchase a new SIM card. This means users in the U.S. who use a phone on AT&T's network and wish to switch to Verizon's network, they don't have to buy a new Verizon SIM card.

Apple SIM is preinstalled on iPad Air 2 with Wi-Fi + Cellular models, but not yet on the iPhone as of March 2015. With Apple SIM, users have the flexibility to choose from a variety of short-term plans from select carriers in the U.S. and UK right on their iPad. Whenever users need it, they can choose the plan that works best for them — with no long-term commitments. Apple SIM is also ideal for people who travel as they are also be able to choose a data plan from a local carrier for the duration of the trip.

An Apple SIM powered iPhone can present problems for carriers as consumers may be tempted to buy an iPhone at full price to have the freedom and flexibility to switch data plans between carriers that offer better deals. Carriers may have to offer more perks to make sure consumers keep buying phones from them instead of Apple. Some carriers also place limitations on how Apple SIM work on their network.
