The third Galilean moon outward from Jupiter and the largest moon in the Solar System. It has a diameter of 5,268 km (3,273 mi) and has the highest mass out of all the planetary satellites. It completes an orbit around Jupiter in about seven days. It was discovered in 1610 by Galileo Galilei.

Ganymede is composed of silicate rock, water, ice, and an iron-rich liquid core. The dark regions cover about a third of the surface and is filled with impact craters from a few billion years ago. The lighter regions are the slightly newer parts of Ganymede's surface created by tectonic activity that was brought on by tidal heating.
