Maggie Lieu

Maggie Lieu (born 1991) is a British astrophysics Ph. D. candidate at Birmingham University who bids to become the first woman to give birth on Mars. She is one of 600 candidates being considered for the Mars One project, a mission that aims to create a permanent human settlement on Mars by 2025.

Starting in 2018, unmanned vehicles will be launched to travel to Mars. In 2024, the first four humans will be sent, with four more every two years after that.

Maggie will spend nearly a decade learning a wide array of new skills including medicine, agriculture, plumbing and electronics if she makes it to Mars. She will also be trained to deal with potential risks of starvation, dehydration, lethal levels of radiation as well as extremely cold temperatures (-62C.)

Maggie, who lives in Coventry in the West Midlands, thinks it will be possible to become a parent on the red planet. “It would be incredible to be the Adam and Eve of another planet,” she said.
