The Jersey Devil
The Jersey Devil is a legendary creature said to have been spawned in and still roaming the Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey. The story goes that a woman living there in the early 1700's had a relationship with a demonic being. One evening she told the local midwife that she was pregnant; she asked her to come out to her home deep in the forest. When the midwife arrived she was surprised to see the woman's belly growing right before her eyes, as if whatever was inside of her was trying to get out. The woman seemed to be in very little pain. She just lay back on the bed and quietly waited. In no time at all, a healthy young boy was born, but it was only moments after his birth that he began to change. His neck and face grew long, his feet curled and hardened into hooves, and thick, black, leathery wings sprouted from his shoulders. With a deafening cry he tore out the window and into the stormy night. It has been more than 200 years, but there are those who still claim to occasionally see the beast known as the Jersey Devil.
