Turner Prize

The Turner Prize is an annual prize awarded since 1984 to a British visual artist under the age of 50 who is deemed to have put on the best exhibition of the previous 12 months. The prize is named after the painter J.M.W.Turner, is organised by the Tate gallery and staged at Tate Britain in London. It has become the United Kingdom's most well-known art award and has become associated primarily with conceptual art. As of 2012 the monetary award has been set at 25,000 pounds, and is presented by a celebrity. During its history the award has been vulnerable to controversy and numerous protests.
