satgudi oranges
Satgudi oranges are one of the three main varieties of sweet orange grown in India. Known botanically as Citrus sinesis, sweet oranges can be identified by their thin skin that hugs the inner sections of flesh and are often referred to as being ‘tight-skinned’.
Satgudi oranges have a deep orange colored, thin outer skin with a very juicy inner flesh. This citrus has a sweet flavor that is low in acid and has a mildly tart finish.
Serving Ideas
Satgudi oranges are most often eaten fresh, out-of-hand or juiced and blended with other fruit or vegetable juices. The tight-skinned satgudi oranges have a good shelf-life and can be kept refrigerated for up to four months.
Geography/History
Satgudi oranges are native to the southeastern part of India, particularly the region of Andhra Pradesh which is located on the Bay of Bengal. Sweet orange cultivation is important in India, as it helps to make juices from local fruits and vegetables more palatable. Sweet oranges are the second most widely cultivated citrus fruits in India.
Seasons/Availability
Satgudi orange can be found growing nearly year-round in sub-tropical climates with a peak season in the late fall through winter months.
