Human genome
The human genome consists of 23 chromosome and the small mitochondrial DNA. 22 of the 23 chromosomes are autosomal chromosome pairs and the last one being a gender-determining pair. In total, the human genome contains the sequences of the 3 billion chemical base pairs that make up human DNA and approximately 20,000-25,000 genes. By understanding human genome, scientists are able to develop new medical applications that can significantly advance the state of health care.

gap junctions
Medical; Human genome
1) Connections between cells which allow passage of small molecules and electric current. Gap junctions were first described anatomically as regions of close apposition between cells with a narrow ...
galactose
Medical; Human genome
An aldohexose that occurs naturally in the D-form in lactose, cerebrosides, gangliosides, and mucoproteins. Deficiency of galactosyl-1-phosphate uridyltransferase (galactose-1-phosphate ...
glomerulus
Medical; Human genome
A cluster of convoluted capillaries beginning at each nephric tubule in the kidney and held together by connective tissue.
genetic testing
Medical; Human genome
1) Analyzing DNA to look for a genetic alteration that may indicate an increased risk for developing a specific disease or disorder. 2) Analyzing an individual's genetic material to determine ...
hepatocellular carcinoma
Medical; Human genome
1) A malignant tumor that arises from hepatocytes. Hepatocellular carcinoma is relatively rare in the United States but very common in all African countries south of the Sahara and in Southeast ...
hormone
Medical; Human genome
Chemicals produced by glands in the body and circulated in the bloodstream. Hormones control the actions of certain cells or organs.
heterochromatin
Medical; Human genome
Densely staining chromatin that appears as nodules in or along chromosomes and contains relatively few genes.
