Human genome
The human genome consists of 23 chromosome and the small mitochondrial DNA. 22 of the 23 chromosomes are autosomal chromosome pairs and the last one being a gender-determining pair. In total, the human genome contains the sequences of the 3 billion chemical base pairs that make up human DNA and approximately 20,000-25,000 genes. By understanding human genome, scientists are able to develop new medical applications that can significantly advance the state of health care.
Contributors in Human genome
Human genome
corepressor
Medical; Human genome
A small molecule that activates a particular genetic repressor by combining with it.
diagnostic testing
Medical; Human genome
Testing designed to confirm or exclude a known or suspected genetic disorder in a symptomatic individual or, prenatally, in a fetus at risk for a certain genetic condition.
dehydrogenase
Medical; Human genome
An enzyme that accelerates the removal of hydrogen from metabolites and its transfer to other substances.
corpus callosum
Medical; Human genome
The great band of commissural fibers uniting the cerebral hemispheres.
contig mapping
Medical; Human genome
A map depicting the relative order of a linked library of overlapping clones representing a complete chromosomal segment.
deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)
Medical; Human genome
1) The molecules inside cells that carry genetic information and pass it from one generation to the next. 2) DNA is the chemical name for the molecule that carries genetic instructions in all ...
densitometry
Medical; Human genome
Method of identifying gene dosage or expression by measurement of light absorption on an autoradiogram (film) of a band (or spot) representing a DNA, RNA, or protein sample; useful in detecting ...
