Immunology

Immunology is the study of the structuree and function of the immune system which is responsible for the protection from invading foreign macromolecules or organisms. It is a broad branch of biomedical science that covers the study of all aspects of the immune system in organisms. It deals with the physiological functioning of the immune system in both healthy states and immunological disorders (autoimmune diseases, hypersensitivities, immune deficiency, transplant rejection); the physical, chemical and physiological characteristics of the components of the immune system in vitro, in situ, and in vivo.

Biology; Immunology

Many proteins are partly or entirely composed of protein domains known as immunoglobulin domains or Ig domains because they were first described in antibody molecules. Immunoglobulin domains are ...

B cell

Biology; Immunology

A B cell, or B lymphocyte, is one of the two major types of lymphocyte. The antigen receptor on B lymphocytes, usually called the B-cell receptor, is a cell-surface immunoglobulin. On activation by ...

intercellular adhesion molecules (ICAMs)

Biology; Immunology

The ICAMs are cell-surface ligands for the leukocyte integrins and are crucial in the binding of lymphocytes and other leukocytes to certain cells, including antigen-presenting cells and endothelial ...

tacrolimus

Biology; Immunology

Tacrolimus, or FK506, is an immunosuppressive polypeptide drug that inactivates T cells by inhibiting signal transduction from the T-cell receptor. Tacrolimus and cyclosporin A are the most commonly ...

mucosal epithelia

Biology; Immunology

All of the body’s internal epithelial organs are lined with epithelium that is coated with mucus, and are therefore called mucosal epithelia. This system is the site of entry for virtually all ...

SDS-PAGE

Biology; Immunology

SDS-PAGE is the common abbreviation for polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) of proteins dissolved in the detergent sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). This technique is widely used to characterize ...

acquired immune deficiency syndrome

Biology; Immunology
